laptops in central asia

Country forums / Central Asia

Hi,

Has anyone brought a laptop to Central Asia? Did you use a converter? I have been told that it won't be necessary because the voltage on my power cord does go up to 240 volts, but am a little afraid of destroying my laptop. Any words of wisdom?

Hi,
I just returned from Uzbekistan a month ago, and had no problems with my laptop anywhere. I did not use an adapter, as the newer LT,s have enough voltage allowance...hope that helps.

Thanks!

I've used my laptop for several months with no problems in Bishkek and Osh, Kyrgyzstan. I would reccommend using a surge protector though.

This may sound obvious, but just passing it on. One of my travel companions had a laptop with him while we in the Pamirs. The jeep ride killed it. Make sure its padded down when you're travelling on the horrible roads - and reconsider taking it on a UAZ jeep...

You might look at the power adapter but generally speaking all power adapters for computers these days are 100-240 v.

You should bring a small surge protector and you might need a set of plug adapters depending upon where you are coming from as the shape of the plug will likely be different. You can see pictures of the outlet shapes by looking at the LP destinations guides, under the fast facts, scroll almost to the bottom and the information should be there. A plug adapter set with the 4 or 5 most common shapes can be purchased from places online like magellans or at the airport or at most good luggage shops and occasionally at a good hardware store.

I agree about making sure that your laptop is well protected.

In fact, unless you absolutely need it for some specific reason, I would not recommend traveling with one. It can quickly become like an albatross around your neck as you must carry it everywhere. You won't find too many places where you can safely lock it up and leave it while you are out and about.
