Thanks to everyone who replied to my questions - all v helpful! Got a slightly trickier one now:
Japanese nationals don't need a Krygyz visa (we're sure), but my girlfriend (who's Japanese) thinks she needs to get some sort of resident's permit once inside the country. I've never heard of such a document - how about you?? If such a thing is required, where and how does one apply? Could it be that I've never heard of it because, being British, I need a visa, which somehow negates the need for a resident's permit?
Thanks again,
S

Some nationals even need both of visa and registration(registracja in Russian).
I am sure that British need only visa, and for Japanese registration.
Your girlfriend needs registered within three days
from the entry date, otherwise she will be penaltied when she go out of the country. Make sure to get registered.
She can apply in OVIR office which is on Kievskaja street (near the corner of the Kievskaja and Sovietskaja).
They do not have application form so you need to make the form in Russian or Kyrgyz language by yourself.
I heard the above information from Japanese staying in Nomads Home Gueshouse, Bishkek.
Nomads Home, they have form model of registration and I saw Japanese guys trying to make documents.
Ask Nomads they will be willing to tell you something about it.
