Hi.

I and 8 friends are considering to drive our own bus (13,5 meter long, 12 ton total weight) the Karakoram Highway from China to Pakistan around November 1st.
Two questions:

1. How long time will it take to drive from Kashgar to Islamabad?
2. Due to the last weeks increasing tension, especially in the Kohistan region; is it safe?

Thanks.

You may want to repost this on the China sub-branch of the North-East Asia branch and the Pakistan sub-branch of the Indian Subcontinent branch.

You may also ask about when the Karakhoram Highway closes, which IIRC is usually in late October or November, depending on weather conditions.

You cannot drive your own vehicle in China without special permission which normally takes 3 months and about $1000 to organise, so "considering" things now in early September is a little late, I think.

Your 2 options to get to India from Central Asia are;

1) Turkmenistan, Iran, Pakistan, India

2) Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India

You need a Carnet to drive in India & Pakistan so hope you already have that organised.

Thanks for helping answers.

We have already made all the paperwork and paid the $$$ to the Chinese for the trip from the Torugart pass to Kunjerab pass. So most of all, we want to go this way. Our only consern is the safety situation in Northern Pakistan.

More questions:
1) If we choose the "Turkmenistan"- route, I suppose the easiest way from Kyrgyzstan would be through Uzbekistan. Do you know if there is much hazzle to get driving permission for own vehicle in Uzbekistan? I've heard rumors..

2) Is it safe to drive through Afghanistan, with the war and everything?

Thanks again,

Karterud

From what I've read, the Chinese and Pakistan armies keep the Karakhoram Highway very safe, but it might not be wise to wander off into side canyons.
