How do I find a venue for classical UZ music? Shashmaqam or the like?Country forums / Central Asia / Uzbekistan
I've been trying to find a venue for Shashmaqam music in Uzbekistan and am having a tough time. Does anyone know where I can hear Shashmaqam or other Classical Uzbek music? Where to look while we're in UZ this October? Which city will I have the best luck seeing a performance? Do any music schools or cultural organizations promote shashmaqam? Thanks for any help.
Good shashmaqam is mostly made for export these days. If you are looking for historically informed performances, then you're more likely to find them in Europe or North America by touring ensembles who are sadly little appreciated in Uzbekistan or Tajikistan themselves. If you contact the staff at Uzbek radio, you might be able to attend a performance by an ensemble playing the style that arose in the Communist era, which has very little resemblance to the real thing. | 1
That is certainly sad to hear. Are there any schools of music that teach any other forms of classical Uzbek music? Maybe the folks at Uzbek Radio will know. Thank you so much for that information. It's a place to start. | 2
