Hi
Could any one inform me as to the money situation in the Stans. I've trvelled through SE Asia and China basically on my credit card using ATM's. Can I do this in the Stans or do I need hard currency and/or Travellors Cheques.
Many Thanks

Hi
There are some ATMs in the big cities and most will take VISA or Mastercard. I took money out in Dushanbe, Tashkent and Bishkek, and you can get cash advances from banks in those cities as well. I would still advise taking some hard currency though (US dollars) because there are plenty of places that you want to visit that don't have ATMs.
Enjoy the trip.

If you travel to Kazakhstan you will find ATM in almost every more or less big village that has post office and bank branch. In the cities like Almaty, Astana and some others you will find ATM basically around every other corner. All big hotels have at least 1
|Uzbekistan - If you do find an atm, it either won't work at all, or it won't take your card, even if its at a western union office. Consider uzbek cash only.
kyrgyzstan - There is an ATM oppositethe parliament building in (ifmemory servescorrect)a kLM office - outside bishkek its dicey, probably, but don't count on it.
kazakhstan - i didn't change cash once in three weeks, even in the small isolatedold soviet towns you'll still have an atm.
