I saw a volunteer project in Kyrgyzstan in which you could build houses for people, great I thought, but then I saw that it was $1400 (excluding airfare). I don't mind paying for my own food, accommodation or ticket but I thought $1400 was steep for volunteering my time and work.

Does anyone know of any projects that I am able to join with a reasonable price tag? Bearing in mind that I am a 17 yr old male and will going on my own . So preferably with atleast some people who speak English and in Kyrgyzstan or Kazakhstan, with relatively easy transport links from Almaty and Bishkek?

Expat and volunteer community in Bishkek is pretty small and casual. If you ask around among expats you surely can find something. 1400 bucks is a lot in Bishkek--with only part of that you could spend a lot of time in town finding projects that are worthwhile--at the very least you could have a great vacation. Best place to ask is Fatboy's (a sidewalk cafe and local institution), very touristy but all the peace corps and aid types end up there eventually. You might even be able to pull of some low-paid job with the Bishkek English language paper or one of the two English colleges in the city. Lots harder in Kazakhstan--way richer, more red tape, slightly more paranoid, way bigger population (keep in mind the volunteer and expat community is split in half now that Almaty is not the capitol. Kyrgyzstan is friendlier but volunteer gigs may be somewhat primitive.
