Tajikistan

Hello,

I could travel in Tajikistan and Kyrghyzstan between mid April and May and I need suggestions on what to bring, except for trekking boots. I'm not a trekking specialist and I don't plan anything too adventourous: I will see my option with CBT or some other local agencies.

-How are the temperatures in the period? Is the snow jacket I used for skiing enough?
-Is it necessary to bring my own sleeping bag?
-I never used a backpack, I don't like them as they are not that big, always used a BIG…

I spent about 2 1/2 months traveling through Central Asia in the spring/summer of 2011. I had the Central Asia book with me and have to admit that it did come in handy sometimes. There are some problems with the book and inaccuracies and I kept a record of anything that was off as well as things that could be added or improved for your next addition.

I am planning on passing Tajikstan for 7 days through M41 and Pamir Highway.

The itinerary will be starting from Dushanbe-Kohrog-Ishkashim-Langar-Alichur-Murgab-Sary Tash-Osh-and Bishkek(Kyrkiz).

Where would it be preferable to stop over ?

I’m planning a trip to central Asia (KG, UZ, TJ) in the summer of 2012 and started looking into the available guidebooks. I got the latest LP of central Asia but unfortunately it seems to be a bit slim on information probably due to the fact that it covers information about 5 countries in one book.

I’m mainly looking for trekking information (routes, etc.) and off the beaten path places to travel to in those countries.

I'm travelling to Tajik during end June and I want to take the M41 all the way long from Dushenave to Kirgystan. Does anybody know if there is any bus or public transport to do this journey ? How long it takes ?

If not, what is the alternative option ?

I shall be entering Tajikistan around the 1st of June. My plans are to fly from Dushanbe to Khorog and then from Khorog I want to hire a vehicle/driver to go to Kyrgyzstan border via Ishkashim and Langar.
Can anyone recommend a driver and give a rough idea of costs.
Hoping to stop along way and do a bit of trekking so will probably allow upto 3 weeks for the trip.
Obviously somedays we will stay in the same place so we won't be travelling every day.

Has anyone had a recent experience obtaining a Tajikistan visa at the Tajikistan embassy in Tashkent?
Cost for 30-day single entry visa? Length of time needed to obtain the visa? Cost for expediting in one day? Is an LOI required for Americans? Documents required? Can a GBAO be obtained? Will getting a visa be difficult to do if I don't speak Russian? Any hassles?

So I'm in Dushanbe right now and kinda confused. When I arrived at Dushanbe airport I wasn't given a customs form (or a form to declare what I had on me. I did fill out a form with my passport number, nationality, and place where I was staying). I didn't think to ask, and in hind sight I don't remember anyone else filling one out. Now that I'm here I'm a little worried about when I fly out and whether or not this will be a problem.

We are planning on visiting Central Asia in May and are looking at options to visit Tajikistan. Originally we were just going to cross the border and visit Penjikent from Samarkand.. but apparently that border is closed. We are looking at transport options for Osh to Samarkand via TJ.
