I am considering about 2 weeks in Tajikistan in August, would that be the right time to go? What would the weather be like? Would it be the right time to hike? Any recommendations on cannot miss spots?
Cheers,

FYI: If there's a better Central Asian country for August, I am open to hearing about this as well...
Summer is really the only time to go to Tajikistan. The Pamir Highway becomes inaccessible in the winter, and very difficult to travel in spring and fall.
Agreed August is a great time for the mountains, though it can be pretty hot in Dushanbe.
How would you two compare trekking (and travel) in Tajikistan to in Kyrgyzstan? Is one substantially easier/more beautiful, or would you recommend one needs more time than the other? I have 2 weeks now, but live in the region, so will be able to come back for longer in the future...
Kyrgyzstan is much easier access and better organized in terms of CBT However, Tajikistan offers a sense of at-the-end-of-the-worldness (which also makes it more expensive and time consuming).
In terms of beauty, i was not blown away by the Pamirs and the Fan Mountains (while nice) aren't "spectacular". Kyrgyzstan is at least equally as beautiful.
Interesting breakdown, and appreciated... so if they offer the same beauty, what gives Tajikistan that "end-of-the-world" feeling?
The Pamirs are about as isolated as you're going to get. If something goes wrong, you're a 48 hours drive from the nearest "decent" hospital. You eat provisions that are stale when they arrive at the shop (it's a long trip to get there.) And with countless hikes available, there is a very high likelihood you won't see anybody if you don't want to.
