All,

Applied in London for Tajik visa. Issued no problem.
London 'Embassy' open Monday and Thursday, 10-12.
It's not really an embassy, more of an office rental space... you go there and wait in a lobby, no Tajiki in site, just office workers for other businesses.
Hardly anyone in the queue, so no need to go early. Eventually, 30 minutes later, someone turned up and collected my papers, asked for the fee in cash, got my passport and told me I could leave. No receipt at all!!
I went back 5 working days later (same day the following week) and found my passport in a white envelope with the offfice space rental receptionist.
Weird the whole thing, but completely hassle free.

I got 1 month tourist visa, single entry for 80 pounds, plus 50 pounds for the GBAO permit.
Had to present passport, copy of main page, letter with rough itinerary, no hotel bookings required, no flights in our out, no visas for other countries. The GBAO permit also required an additional letter, a one liner asking for it, and it comes as an additional stamp in your passport.

Cheers,
straydog

50 Pounds for GBAO??? What a rip! Mine was $5 in Bishkek.

It's quite obviously a ripoff fluffy_bunny, cash in hand, no receipts whatsover. It's just a stamp on your passport which leaves no trace, and cash stays in the hands of those who get it first... so it seems.
I was in 'get the visas sorted quickly' mode, so I didn't mind too much (I would have been furious had I already been in 'travelling mode'), and I was sure, from the way it was handled at the start that this would have been a no questions asked visa...
Not quite the same for Turkmenistan...

as usual the user friendly thorn tree interface has disappear to leave room for a new look what I am surprised with is the almost no feed on the tajikistan subject which use to be full of interesting informers previously, but has to adapt so to start with are visas given on arrival by plane in dushambe, having been there some years back there was a travel agent local who was getting gbao for a fee, there was another money to be paid for some mysterious permit which we did not do and had a hard time getting rid of some policemen on the main avenue in dushambe who really meant business but living in the east for very long we managed to get off their clutch but think of paying this time for headache free sake!! we want to cycle down to langar and get close to the chinese border landing finally in murghab (mosquitoes infested hell) from where we would travel west across back to dushambe feel like throwing a bottle in the sea!!!

gbao permit costs $10 with tour agencies, and this includes their service (for paper work, submission to MFA, etc) ..

tajik visa you can get also much cheaper .. $50 LOI with tour agencies, and $15 at the Dushanbe airport on arrival .. 80 countries citizens can get visa upon arrival ..

i have very good tour agent which explains to our group all details of our tour ))
if you are interested in a tour with very good agency and service, i would recommend you this guy ..

as for us, if you have plans to Pamirs sometimes in July/August, please contact me at rus.warren@yahoo.com to join us

thanks

I read a few weeks ago that Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan abolished Visa's for several countries (list of 44 including several European and North American countries).

http://www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntree/thread.jspa?threadID=2230291

Is this still in effect?

Since ppl are discussing getting visa's the answer seems "no"

The list of 44 is for Kyrgyzstan, not Tajikistan. Last year, Tajikistan passed a similar law, but to my knowledge, it was never ratified. That happens a lot in Tajikistan. Same with the border with China.
