Here's one I'll bet you haven't heard!!

My Tajik Tourist Visa, issued in Bishkek, is valid from 20 August 2011 until 21 September, for a total of 33 days. I had requested a standard 30 day visa and did not notice the 21 Sept date until today. My date of entry into Tajistan was 21 August 2011, one day after the "valid from" date.

Here's the question: Do I need to register with OVIR (or another office) if I stay in Taj until 21 Sept as I now intend? I cannot depart earlier as I'm continuing to Uzbekistan and my Uzbek visa does not begin until 21 September 2011.

Will the border officers look only at the "valid until" date and not count the days when I depart for Samarkand?

Any suggestions?

It's a 1 month visa, not a 30 days visa. A month is calculated as a calendar month. If you travel in February, you'd get fewer days. It's no problem with immigration.

As previously stated, its a one month visa not a given number of days. However, if you had entered Tajikistan on the day earlier (i.e. 20th) then the OVIR may have been required as theoretically you'd have been in Tajikistan for a month and a day. If you leave on the same date as your arrival you should be fine.

Note that there is a real catch here. If you are staying longer than a month, you have to request an OVIR within 3 days of entering the country - any later then you risk a significant fine, even if you come clean before getting to a border. Watch out if you get visas longer than 1 month duration as they don't reliably tell you this detail.

Another watch out are public holidays and bad weather when the border might close, hence delaying departure. Its recommended that you cover yourself on your visa a couple of days either way just in case. One thing I've learned about travelling Central Asia is that you need to build in contingency, just in case...
