Hello,
I will be riding my motorbike on the Pamir Highway (M41) in June, and will divert after Alichur to take the Wakhan Valley rural road. I need to know if the route mention below is doable in a day and the approx duration of travelling time. Has anyone done this recently? I need to know the latest road condition, especially the Wakhan Valley part as I heard that the road here is really bad. FYI, I am used to ride long hours. Any other tips and advises will be much appreciated. Thank you.

Kara Kul – Muzkol – Murgab – Ali Chur
Ali Chur – Langar – Ishkashim
Ishkashim – Khorog – Kalaikum
Kalaikum – Dushanbe

Kara Kul to Alichur is doable during daylight hours by four-wheeled vehicle (I say that having done it with a stop in Murgab), and I'd expect for motorcycle too as the road is good.

Someone may have more recent or vehicle-specific Alichur-to-Langar information. It was a full afternoon's drive when I did it by taxi. The road is not paved. Langar to Ishkashim is just a few hours if you are not stopping, but there are places to see and stay in between. I forget whether it was paved all the way. It should be possible to get from Alichur to Ishkashim in a day, but there are things to see as I say.

I can't help after Khorog.

I met two groups of cyclists on the Wakhan Road two years ago- and they seemed to be managing!

I did my trip in summer 2010, by taxi, hitching, public transport and 4WD (4WD is not needed on our route).

Pedro, me and my friends will be doing the same route (from Dushanbe to Bishkek), just one month later (if everything will go according to plan we will be in Dushanbe on 18th july). We will be travelling with our car (4wd). We have to be in Bishkek by the 4th august, so we have around 15 days for this part of our trip.

Our big wish is to travel through Wakhan corridor and even try to visit the Afghan part of the Wakhan. Though, I don't know if we have enough time for such trip. I would be very happy if someone who have done this before, would help me with advice. Is 15 days enough to come from Dushanbe to Bishkek and visit Afghan Wakhan on the way?

I'd agree with Chris and say that the journey is very do-able. I did Langar to Alichur road 18 months ago and the road was fine then although rough and untarmaced. Watch out for a couple of the turns when you get into the valley down to the Wakhan.

As per Chris's suggestion, what's the rush? You'll miss some amazing scenery in your hurry to get to Dushanbe.

Other things to consider:
1/ I'm assuming that you are coming down from Kyrgyzstan and, if you are travelling at the same pace, may have been in Osh the day before. Watch out for the altitude as you climb really fast and the sickness can come on quickly. If you're on your own then be careful and drop back down if the headaches are starting.
2/ Think about the route from Kalaikhum to Dushanbe - you have the option of taking the direct high pass (with lots of police checkpoints) or the Kulob route which is longer (but I think is the more scenic).

I'm taking the opposite route (by 4x4) again in May and will be back on the forum to let you know if there are more recent updates. Check also the META website for major travel updates.

Jun_fan, I'm not covering Wakhan Corridor, so hv no info about it...perhaps someone else can help on this...

etc4ca, thanks so much for yr reply & advises. Yes, I am fully aware about the altitude thing. As for Kalaikhum - Dushanbe, yes, if the north nearer road is still in bad shape, I will hv to take the southern route via Kulyob. Can u gv me yr email address, so that I can check the latest road condition when u go there? (In case u forget to update it here)...
