@Mjgoali: you call the northern route a road? That's very generous of you. :) You're right, though, it is beautiful.

Khorog - Dushanbe Flight - June 2012
In June 2012 I flew from Khorog to Dushanbe on the daily Tajik Air flight. I travelled from Dushanbe to Khorog in a Marshrutka Land Cruiser, which was not fun given the awful state of the roads. It took about 18 hours and cost 300 somoni. So I was eager to fly back. The owner of my hotel in Khorog, the Lal hotel, has a friend who works at the airport who got me a ticket for the next day. I was lucky because the weather was good for several days so there was no backlog. The hotel guy does not speak english, but there are a couple of people who work at the hotel who do speak english. The friend does not speak english either, so speaking some Russian certainly helped. At 7:30 in the morning the hotel guy grabbed what appeared to be a random driver on the street and told him to drive me to the airport, about 4 km. The airport is on one side of the road and the ticket building is on the other side. I found the friend, and after waiting and chatting, I paid him 100 somoni ( $20 ) and we went around back of the ticket building into a blue room with a small half moon window in the wall. I handed over my passport, waited half an hour, paid the normal price (440) somoni, and got my ticket. The little 17 seater plane was full, so I have no idea if the friend did anything special to get me my ticket. For all I know, I could have done it all myself. But the airplane ride is spectacular and it only takes 1 hour. It was well worth it.
