Hi travellers

I will be crossing into Tajikistan in 2 days and am in Osh at the moment. I need to choose from the Fan mountains, taking in Maguzor Lakes or the Tajik Wakhan taking in Zor Kul Lake. Can you please tell me which is the most scenic as I don't have time for both. I will also be going to Iskander Kul.

thanks

happy travels

if you have already fixed the Iskanderkul choice, then it is already the Fan mountains area.. from Iskanderkul to Marguzor lakes it is about 3-4 hours drive.

if you go to tajikistan, you should have several days/weeks. both are fantastic. i was around 1 week in wakhan and must say, the climate and people there is one of the most beautiful things i have ever seen. also the fan mountains, especially marguzor lakes are fantastic, easily doing by hiking (just take some bottles and food staff with you, altough there are villages and fruits etc. on the way).
if you can choose just one of these options, go to Wakhan, but keep in mind you need a day from dushanbe to khorog (or you get a flight what is not always sure...)

good travel,

mike

You require special permission from the military as well as a serious 4WD to visit Zur Kul.

As stated above both the Fans and Wakhan are very cool and unique. Where to recommend depends on what you are looking for. I think the Fans are really great for shorter trekking trips. Wakhan is great for the views, unique monuments, history and ethnography. Headed to Wakhan, keep in mind transport is spotty so you either need to be flexable or hire your own jeep and driver.

In my opinion Iskander Kul is over-rated, although adjacent areas accessed via Iskander Kul are wonderful.
