Hello folks,

in early October 2012 me and my girlfirend are heading to the Fan Mountains. We have already checked the most relevant information on the region, studied the ZTDA-website in detail, acquired a map and so on. The only think left to do is finding some personal suggestions for a 4-6 days tour (itinerary). We plan to do a mix of home stays and sleeping in a tent. As we are used to carrying heavy backpacks, we do not intend to hire a guide or donkey/porter unless it is highly recommended - for example for safety reasons. With regard to our plans, we have the following questions:

1) Has anyone already done a 4-6 days trekking tour in the Fan Mountains? If so, we will happily appreciate any personal suggestion or description of an itinerary that will lead us to the highlights of the region. Starting and end points (Shing, Artush, Iskander-Kul or what so ever) do not matter as we are going to adjust them in accordance to the reccomendations. I have read some people mentioning the "Golden Ring" of the Fan Mountains, but unfortunately I was not able to find further information about it.

2) How difficult is the Kaznok Pass? Is it doable without a guide for medium experienced mountain trekkers in good physical shape who carry the necessary equipment - given the weather is okay?

3) Can anybody recommend a nice, not too difficult peak along the itinerary?

We will be glad to read any recommendations. We have seen so many beautiful pictures of the Fan Mountains so that we do not really know which part of the Mountains we should focus on.

Thank you very much in advance! Cheers.

I have trekked in the fan mountains for about a week early this month. I started in Sarvoda village ("Zerafshan 1") and went from there to Alaudin lake, over the Alaudin pass down to Kul i Kalon, then to the seven lakes south of Shing (Marguzor), finishing in Penjikent.
Everything was gorgeous. Many beautiful lakes, snowy peaks and incredibly friendly people.

It seems that the area around the Alaudin lake and Kul I kalon is the most popular among trekking groups- you meet lots of people over there and there are tents serving food in the camping areas around both lakes.
That might change in October given that it's not the high season anymore.
Further west I didn't meet anybody but locals.

I have heard from other trekkers that tried to cross the Kaznok pass that it was incredibly difficult and dangerous without technical equipment and knowledge, so they had to turn back.

Thank you very much for this information.

With regard to the Kaznok pass, your "incredibly difficult and dangerous" is much more comprehensible to me than grade 1B.

Hi,
after having hiked the track 3 weeks ago, in reply to your post

I can tell you from my perspective that the Alauddin Pass is easy and that there are no difficulties at all, the trail is clearly visible. Depending on your physical condition and the weight of your backpack (I had about 16kg) you are carrying it will take you about 3-4 hours from Alaudin Lake to Alaudin Pass and than about 2,5 hours from Alaudin Pass to the Kulikalon lakes.

However, given the altitude of 3800 meters you might suffer from headache and be strongly fatigued.
