Dear Travellers,

Me and my friend are willing to go to Xinjaing. Lately this is kind of hard. We don't know how to arrange the trip (from Kirgystan to Beijing) and have a little left to organize. We know that there is needed an invitation letter, and may be a guide or touroperator. Do you know how to help us? The problem is that we are students and trying to make or travel not to expensive.

Apparently, the Irkeshtam border crossing into China is closed: http://www.eurasianet.org/node/68681

If you are on a budget, the other Torugart option is very expensive. I'm not sure about how you sort out Visas for China, but for certain, you don't need a tour operator unless you are planning on going to Tibet, which it seems you are not. However, to cross using the Torugart option you do need a tour operator which is expensive: http://caravanistan.com/border-crossings/kyrgyzstan/torugart-pass/

Hope this helps somewhat

If the roadblock won't be lifted until you get there and can't afford crossing the Torugart Pass, there's no other overland route from Kyrgyzstan. Get a Kazak transit visa(that should be easy) and take the train from Alma-Ata to Urumqi.

I can't say with total certainty what the status of the border is, but the blockade on the road between Osh and Sary-Tash lifted about a week ago and traffic has resumed as normal. The community who set up the blockade say they will leave the road open during Ramadan.

Regardless you still need a visa for China. Buy a round trip t

icket to someplace in the east of China (not Xinjiang), cancel it within 24 hours so you get your money back, and make hotel reservations online that you later cancel also. That should get you a visa.
