Torugart Pass to Kashgar - for "foreigners"?

The pass is "closed" but the way around this is to cross on a tour. In the end, this means arranging transport to drop you off at one side and having a car pick you up at the other. However, this is expensive. $250+ is about the price you'll need to pay. There is no way around this cost.

Johns Cafe in Kashgar or CBT in Naryn can organise it.

You cannot just do it by yourself as the local organiser has to get various permissions in advance

Torgat pass is onlt opend for business for kyrgyzistan and china ,so if the forienger coming through this one you do need permit ,especially you have to book car and guide to pick up you in advance and let them know the arrival date .
And irkeshtam does not require pemit ,as far as you have visa to china .

To add to the above information, the cost of the journey from KG to CN is $300 to $400 (do you want to travel from Bishkek or Naryn?) for the whole car. If you find other people to share the costs, the journey becomes cheaper for you.

You need to go to the travel agent in Bishkek or Naryn two or three days before the date you wish to travel. You must provide the details of your passport and visa for China. After that, it's very easy -- you just have to wake up in time to meet the car when it comes for you!

Hi there , Torgat pass is open, it's not closed , i went there last week for see off a tour group. so no problem for coming in, but unlike Erkeshtam Pass u should have to get contect with some agancy in kashgar before u come across, and you have to send your Passport photocopy via E_mail or Fax to Kashgar since at the border of Kashgar the Customs need some papaer works for you to come in. otherwise after u come to the border you have a problem for come across. last year it happnned to some people when they come to Kashgar without contect with tour agancy in Kashgar and they had to spent a night at the border before , i helped them to bring them into Kashgar throuh a tour company.
for Erkashtam you can go in without any problem and u can get a publich transport to come to kashgar.

Torugart is open actually. Costs for 2 people from Bishkek will be cheaper through Irkeshtam, from 3 persons, the price is already quiet the same. Tour agent don't take special benefit on the transfer. For 2 persons, you have to count about 400USD for both, from Naryn to Kashgar or from Osh to Kashgar.

Torugat and Irkeshtam ( both borders) are open from Monday to Friday for 5 days in a week. Irkeshtam border doesn't need any permit to cross if you have a valid visa to China. But, Torugat Pass is a bit different that you should contact a travel agent on both sides to help you to arrange transportation to Border. I recommend Kubat in Naryn who can help you to arrange transportation at a very competitive prices to Torugat Pass and he can help you to contact a travel agent in Kashgar to pick you up from Torugat Pass to Kashgar as well. Torugat pass in very interesting and the land scape very beautiful. Irkeshtam pass is just so so. Good luck.
