Hello everyone,

I'm planning to spend 2-3 weeks in Kyrgyzstan later this year. I've been taking Russian lessons but I am struggling to say the least. English is my first (and only) language. Can anybody advise on how easy it is to travel and enjoy a spell in the country without a reasonable command of Russian? Do many people speak English? Did you speak Russian whilst in the country?

Many thanks,

Mark

Hi. You'll be fine. My wife and I have just finished travelling through central asia- Kyrgygstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and although Russian would be very helpful, it is amazing the people you meet who can help you out- fellow travellers, locals who speak English. We used the central asia lonely planet book a lot. It became our bible. There is a phrase section at the back , in the various languages . Very helpful. You'll be fine.

Everywhere you can find somebody that'll speak some English especially younger generation. In Kyrgyzstan the same applies. Although you are more likely to encounter English Speakers in Bishkek then other parts of the country.

It's not a problem. Some words are enough.
