Just got visa from Kyrgyzstan in Urumqi (460 yuan and 5 days for any one who is interested. Consulate located next to Central Asia hotel, 58 Hetan Rd).
Going to Kashgar and want to cross overland from there into Kyrg. Has anyone done this recently? Cost? Best route to take? Local transport or private?
Thanks in advance,
Huw

Hi Huw
I have done this route on my bicycle at the end of October 2009. There are two exit/Entry points (Torugart and Irkeshtam) of China to Kyrgyzstan, which one are you taking? I used Irkeshtam as its more stable and opens all year round. The taxi fare from Wuqia to Irkeshtam was about $200 RMB
I understand there is a bus service running Between Kashigar and Osh, but not sure the availability after the Kyrgyz riot in the recent days.

hey,
we travelled the other way round:
from bishkek by shared taxi (about 800-1500com per person) to osh
from osh by shared taxi (about 500-1000 com per person) to sary tash
from sary tash hitchhiked to the border (there are sleeping facilities on both sides) : irkeshtam
from irkeshtam hitchhiked to kashgar (well, the chinese truck driver wanted a bit of money, we gave him 40yuang for 2 persons)
good luck

From Naryn in KG to Kashgar will cost about $350 for car hire over Torgurat Pass with overnight at glorious yurt camp at Tash Rabat.
Price as at May this year. Johns Cafe in Kashgar can organise.
You cannot take the bus.
Hey Britta and everyone else who replied,
Thanks very much for the info, much appreciated.
We got a call from John this morning saying he had another person for the Tourgart pass tomorrow so it makes it a bit more affordable - just!!!
So we leave Kashgar (and China after just more than 2 years!) tomorrow morning.
Any recommendations for Kyrgyzstan welcome, think we'll spend most of our time up around the lake in the North.
Thanks again
Huw and Celi
