I agree with that, which is why I recommended Ethiopia. Tanzania and Kenya came up because he stated a new need to visit several countries nearby on the same trip.

Oh, OP, have you been to Philippines?? Another amazing super cheap country. And not too costly to get to from LA!

I've heard that too.

1 CNY = $0.16 USD today! Unfortunately, there are tourist prices here and local prices here in China. My Chinese-American friend managed to get us local prices for our excursions up Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Shika Snow Mountain above Lijiang and Shangri-la.

In Barcelona, there is subsidized air fare to Marrakech, Morroco, for $30 USD each way. I can't remember how much I paid at the riyads where I stayed for one week. If you don't speak Arabic, French is fine.

I flew Morrocan Air to Cairo, then Egypt Air to Nairobi. My hostel manager in Arusha set me up with a shuttlebus from Nairobi to Arusha for about $35. It cost $100 visa crossing the border, never mind about Zanzibar. In Arusha, I asked the clerk at the Tanzania Travelers Association for the going rate for a budget safari -- $400 each for 3 nights with 4 people. The bus ride the length of Tanzania to Dar es Salaam was about $30 on a first class bus. I don't remember the price of the ferry to Zanzibar. I shared a taxi with other Westerners over to the east side of the island and stayed at a Western/German hotel, which was more expensive than a hostel. At the end, I stayed at a hostel on the west side of the island to get ready for my flight to Nairobi and onward to London, then home. I was in Africa at the same time as smartcookiee, but for only one month, and I also included Madrid and Granada and Gibralter in my trip.

I traveled in Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands during the off-season, and got good rates of only $25/night for a studio apartment for one week, including kitchenette and en suite bathroom, satellite TV, wi-fi, and A/C. But, you have already traveled in that area.

The refugios in Chile's Patagonia -- Torres del Paine National Park -- cost $80/bunkbed/night, including 3 meals in 2010. No different than the USA.
