I need to get out and go for a wander, but, as you all know, money is extremely tight. I am looking for some good ideas on countries that are a good deal against the dollar now. I guess any good deals on plane flights out of Los Angeles would also be a big help. I am a broad-minded, low-budget, highly experienced backpacker so no countries are out of the question. Thanks

I think your question is either misleading or misled. "Strong against the dollar" means little: the dollar is strong right now against euros and yen, but that doesn't mean your best budget bets are Europe or Japan. For a budget holiday, go where airfare and prices for doing whatever you plan to do are low. That suggests parts of Mexico or Central America unless you can find a cheap flight to Southeast Asia.

If you're "highly experienced," you already know that much, so if you're asking for something different perhaps you'll want to clarify.

It's not just a matter of a currency's strength, of course. The Brazilian Real is now a bit weaker against the USD than it was a few months ago, but Brazil is expensive. Argentina less so. Need a bit more info on your criteria than strength of the currency. If no country is out of the question, how about Iran, North Korea, Zimbabwe, Bangladesh? If money is tight, the cost of a flight would seem a paramount concern. How about Mexico? Currency actually doing fairly well, but cheap to get to. Safety concerns in several places, but you can pick and choose.

Thanks everyone. Yes, I guess you are saying it better than I am. I am looking for places that are now an especially good bargain against the dollar. I have always wanted to go to Iran, as a matter of fact. I would also like to do Turkey and Egypt and thought these three would be a good bunch to do as a group. I have done tons of Mexico. It is a good country because of proximity, but I really have spent months upon months there already. I have also done all of Central America except El Salvador. I would like to do more of Panama. Nicaragua is fantastic. I just checked the euro and yen and they absolutely are not good weak against the dollar. Why do say Europe and Japan? Yes, considering the last time I checked, the yen was seventy-something against the dollar, and now it is ninety-something, that would seem better, but the last time I went, it was 120 and still not great value. The euro is seventy-something, which is what it has been forever. I guess you are all right that I am looking for best deals. Sometimes situations change or currencies are particularly weak or good deals, but you all kind of get what I am saying.

If you're looking to spend less and get the most for your money, this has less to do with currencies and more to do with standard of living. SE Asia is very cheap to travel (Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia). Also, Ethiopia is super cheap to travel still.

I backpacked in Egypt. Don't know why you'd need a group. It's easy to do on your own. And it's cheaper now because tourism slowed down.

Done all of SE counties you have mentioned umpteen times. Ethiopia does sound like a good idea. But if you were doing Ethiopia, what surrounding countries would you do as a group. I don't think I have ever spent money on a plane ticket without doing a group of countries. Why do you suggest Ethiopia. I do know a bit, but is it a good time to go there now for some special reason?

See, it would have helped if you had provided a list of places you've been to.

How much time do you have? If you're taking buses within the country, then you will need at least 3 weeks there. Are you willing to fly within Africa? You can go to Kenya and Tanzania (which are not as cheap, but ok if you avoid safaris and other expensive tourist activities like that), but there is no public transit to Kenya. So you have to fly (not cheap) or negotiate to ride on the back of a truck for 3 days over pretty crappy roads (that's where backpacking experience comes in). It's relatively easy to get around Kenya and Tanzania via bus. Then you can go to Malawi as well which is pretty cheap. None of these are as cheap as SE Asia except Ethiopia though.

I backpacked for 3 months through Africa from Cape Town to Cairo. I used to have my trip report here, but all the old threads are gone. Thankfully, I posted it on TripAdvisor as well. So you can read it here and get all the details on Ethiopia and other countries. http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g294200-i9124-k2604420-Review_of_3_mo_Trip_from_Cape_Town_to_Egypt-Egypt.html

Oh, I don't mean as group travel, I meant as a group of countries. All the SE you mentioned and more I have done umpteen times. I am kind of travelled out, when it comes to Asian. Egypt sounds interesting. Did you do other countries on that trip or only Egypt?

I hate the way this site is now. Sorry, I have been having a little difficulty posting back right away. I keep clicking the wrong thing. I have lots of time. I was going to do that once. I was going to fly into Tanzania, then go into Kenya. I especially wanted to go to Zanzibar. I think there must be buses from Tanzania to Kenya, absolutely. I don't know anything about Malawi. Did you like traveling here?
