I am planning a trip next week to the big island and I want to try 'snuba.'
Has anybody out there tried it & what was your experience?
'Snuba" is a cross between scuba & snorkeling.
You are tethered to the boat with an air hose & you can only go down to 25 feet.
Thanks.

We observed people doing snuba last month while we were snorkeling (in Mexico, not Hawaii). They walked along the bottom at a snail's pace, pulling themselves along by means of a handrail that had been installed for that purpose. They explored an area of sea bottom no bigger than my living room carpet. Meanwhile, we snorkelers were paddling freely up and down vast sections of reef.
I know, I'm being a snorkel snob. Hey, if you're at the beach in Hawaii, it's all good anyway. But if you haven't tried snorkeling, trust me, it's easy. Gf picked it right up.
Enjoy.

Thanks for the reply.
The outfit that does snuba in Hawaii has the option of doing it on
one of the beaches in Kona or you can take their snuba boat.
I am thinking the Snuba boat would maybe a better experience and it may be worth the extra money.
(Double the beach excursion.)
I am also going snorkeling atleast one day.
The thing about the snuba is you can go as deep as 20 to 25 feet.
It might be my only chance to get up close with some of the fish since I have asthma & can't get scuba certified.
If anybody else has any advise or has snuba'd before, please let me know.
Also, has anybody been to 'two step' recently & communed with the dolphins??
My boyfriend says dolphins are only for little kids.
I think it would be fun since they are wild & free hawaiian dolphins...
I heard you have to be there very early in the morning is that true.
I just might go while he goes deep sea fishing.

Has anybody done it?
Is it worth the $$$?

About 2step and dolphins, they are unpredictable - not always there, and not only there in the mornings. While you might have more luck seeing them in the mornings, the 3 times I saw dolphins there were all afternoons. Twice the dolphins were only passing through, although they did come quite close to shore. The 3rd time, they were there all day, from about 9am until after we left after 4pm. They were fairly far out so you had to swim (snorkel) a good ways out, but it was an absolutely incredible experience. It was a pod of about 40 dolphins and it was fascinating watching their social interactions (with each other, they couldn't have cared less about us) and listening to them chatting (clicking) with each other. I highly recommend snorkeling at 2-step regardless of whether the dolphins show up, but if they do, even better!

You know, if your concern with SCUBA is asthma, you might want to talk to your doctor about snuba. The greatest pressure differences occur in shallow diving, not deeper diving, and my understanding is that the problem with asthmatics diving is their ability to equalize. Even as shallow as 25 feet, you'll be needing to equalize quite a bit.
As a diver, I love and highly recommend any diving experience, but if you're concerned enough not to dive, you should probably be concerned about snuba, too. Enjoy your trip!
