The hostel at Fort Mason (near Fisherman's Wharf) is in a beautiful location with views of the Golden Gate Bridge.

For things not to miss and day trips, you need to be more specific. What do you like? Have you been to SF before? For the day trips, will you have a car? Are you interested in hikes (Muir Woods), surfing (Santa Cruz), wine tasting (Sonoma, Napa), small towns (Calistoga, Half Moon Bay)... Have you looked at a guidebook? Also check out the first post - there's plenty of info on SF and the Bay Area.

Bring a jacket.

Suggest you do a search of the thorntree (eg. in USA FAQ in the first post ..) as there are plenty of SF posts already.

A bookstore where guidebooks are sold, then FAQs on this branch.

Then an actual question.

Cheers!

I have no trouble recommending the Adelaide hostel because I actually stayed there...

reviews on Fodor's

I know this is going to sound very touristy but I'd strongly advise you to ride the cable cars as much as you can!

I've said it before but I'll say it again - usahostels is very good - nice area of town. Cable car it down to fishermans wharf and catch a boat trip out and around golden gate bridge - the local fishermen have some good stories.
Eat at Joe's crabshack! There are all kinds of day trips that can be down - alcatraz is the most obvously and golden gate parkJapanese tea garden is very nice for the afternoon.

#1 -- if you do decide to go to Alcatraz I would strongly advise you to get your tickets a few weeks in advance. As you probably guessed, it's one of the most popular tourist attractions in SF and everyone wants to go there.

The following is the official link where you can get the tickets in advance:
