BY FAR the best parts of old Rt. 66 are between roughly between Las Vegas and Flagstaff. Specifically, the section over the Black Range between Oatman and Kingman, AZ and the section between Kingman and Seligman via Peach Springs. The rest is mostly covered by interstate highway, with scattered kitschy memorabilia in towns along the way. There area a few nice quiet sections of "really old" Rt. 66 in New Mexico, the pre-1937 alignment, before it was paved.
But whatever. Unless you have a very specific interest in Rt. 66 history, its really a terrible organizing theme for a road trip. Rt. 66 wasn't established because it was the most scenically interesting route west, it was simply the most efficient and feasible route available at the time. Along most of its length, its absolutely and painfully dull.
any other suggestions for a good road trip
Almost anything else in the southwest would be superior. In November you might consider AZ and New Mexico with an emphasis on the southern parts of those states. East of New Mexico, points of interest are few and far between, on pretty much any route you take. But we don't know how much time you have or what you're interests are, so its hard to dig too far into specifics. So, what are you looking to see and do? how much time do you have?
