Reno or Albuquerque as a place to live for someone in their late 50s, living on retirement annuity, investments and occasional work (e.g., sub teaching, maybe something in the gaming industry in the case of Reno)?

Another vote for Reno. There are many nice places to live surrounding Reno, and then there is the Carson Valley with Carson City, Gardnerville and Minden. Getting past some of the comments of these cities and away from the highways, you will find enjoyable places to live. My biggest drawback (being from SoCal) would be the longer winters, shorter summers, and oftimes it is windy. If you are in the valleys, there will be occasional snow with measurements in a few inches compared to the higher elevations. There is a Monday-Friday bus (PRIDE) that runs a few times a day between Carson City and Reno - downtown, airport and Meadowwood Mall. Also, medical facilities are good in Reno, and the Carson-Tahoe Hospital is less than a year old (state of the art) on the north end of CarsonCity and Hwy 395. Of course, recreational facitilities abound throughout the Lake Tahoe area.

ALB. would be less expensive to live a middle class lifestyle...Indian Casino work here is mostly min. wage.Winters might be drier ,temps about the same.I'd say recreational access, aside from Lake Tahoe, would be a wash. In New Mexico ,green is a simple condiment...carracar

The biggest problem with Reno is that the cost of housing has pretty much exceeded what the average person can afford on a retirement income. Land values in the Wahoe Valley from Gardnerville north have become very expensive (although there is no personal income tax in Nevada). Now if all you are looking for is a cheap apartment, Reno has a ample supply of flophouses that can be had cheaply.

The weather in ABQ is quite a bit warmer during the winter months.

Both cities have ample cultural and sports opportunities as they have large universities. Both have ample recreational opportunities within 50-100 miles to keep you busy for years. And in both, you have access to a major airport.

You could do a lot worse.

Have you visited either city?Reno in my opinion is a hole that I would not visit again if I was given free lodging and transportation.Perhaps the "burbs" are more attractive but the city isn't much.We were offered an opportunity to move there 3 yrs ago but chose the Seattle area instead (rain and all).If your still open to other retirement areas, give more specifics and I'm sure you'll get some valuable suggestions.

Visit both. I agree Reno is a hole but at least its close to Tahoe. I wasn't that impressed with Albuquerque either but it's close to Santa Fe.

I have two sons who have lived in Carson City for twenty five years, and I have seen the growth taking place. There are neighborhoods around several golf courses, and nice housing all over that area - have a realtor take you around. Within two hours you can head south and be at June Lake, etc., or another few 3 or 4 hours west, and you can be in San Francisco. There are many options for an enjoyable life southeast of Reno.

My daughter has in-laws in Albuquerque, and I wouldn't recommend that city! Her relatives left their house Tuesday morning, and within 15 minutes the house was torn apart, striped, and anything of value was taken. The neighbor was asked if she called the police, and she didn't think it was her business. So, that colors my feelings about Alb.

You shouldn't judge an entire community based on one person's bad luck.

#7, your in-laws must have had it coming. That's not a normal occurance in a suburban neighborhood.

No one deserves to have their house broken into and stripped of its contents. Why would you even joke about something like that...assuming that was a joke? Sometimes I'm not so sure on this messageboard.
