Do not fear an old fashioned travel agent for this. You don't have to pay if you don't like what they offer.

Also try airtreks.com for oddball round the continent or round the world fares and routings. Sometimes they are amazingly cheap.

And no, I won't touch the misspelling in the 2nd part. But I'm sure it'd be a lot less than the airfare.

Worth asking your travel agent for a comparative total on a discount London > New York return, and a discount domestic NY > LA return - might be competitive to an open jaws or loop.

Since they cleaned up Times Square, I have a fealing "suck fares" have gone up quite a bit....

As #5 said, You might want to compare how much it costs buying a roundtrip London-NYC, and one way fare NYC-LAX rather than an open jaw. Jet blue usually has decent one way fares. (usually in the $150-$200 range). Check their website.

you can do open jaw on kayak, expedia, orbitz,....it is usually referred to as multi-city in the are where you choose round trip, one way, etc.
