Camp Fire Now 29 known fatalities. The Camp Fire is now tied with the 1933 Griffith Park Fire for deadliest fire in California history.

Without being morbid at all - I find 30 deaths in a town of 6700 structures destroyed almost minimal. We had three small towns devastated in 2009, but there were more than 200 deaths. In the 1930s there were far more than that. Different conditions - I guess.

Thanks for the updates nutrax.

Camp Fire
129,000 acres. 25% contained.

Correction to missing persons report. The Sheriff has gotten over 500 reports (some are duplicate). 107 people were located; 228 still missing.

No change in road closures. Highway 99 is open; Highway 70 and other roads in the area closed. Smoke is still a serious problem in much of Northern California. Fire depts are distributing masks in some cities.

Strong northeast winds are expected to continue through Monday morning. Firefighters worked through the night to hold perimeter lines and provide structure defense in areas where the fire was impacting structures. Steep rugged terrain in some areas will impede control operations. Today firefighters will continue to fight the fire aggressively, provide structure defense and strategically be prepositioned in the case of any wind shift

The last measurable rain in the area as 211 days ago. Maybe, just maybe, a change in weather patterns next week.

Rocky Fire Southern California, LA area, Simi Valley, just east of Woolsey Fire

Burning right off the 118 Freeway between Simi Valley and Chatsworth
Freeway is completely shut down from Yosemite Avenue to Topanga Canyon Boulevard
Metrolink has halted service in the area

Responders are jumping on this one to keep it small, including air support. I spotted two Super Scooper tankers, registered to Gouvernement du Quebec. just

Rocky Fire was renamed Peak Fire In any case, they stopped the spread after about 100 acres burned. Watched some aerial footage of those Super Scoopers. They knocked down the flames pretty quickly.

Camp Fire

Firefighters were successful in many areas of the fire today. Firefighters were able to hold the current fire perimeter line in some areas of the fire footprint. [Most fire activity was on the north.] There is still the potential of moderate fire behavior. Tonight firefighters will continue to control the perimeter line. Firefighters will continue to provide structure protection throughout the night. Firefighters will continue to construct and reinforce both direct and indirect fire lines. Forecasted low relative humidity and dry fuel moistures combined with steep rugged terrain will continue to impede control operations.

About 7200 structures are known to have been destroyed, mostly residences. Assessment is still ongoing.

There are now 42 confirmed fatalities. Four have been identified. Additional search & recovery teams are being brought in, including cadaver dogs. The military is supplying a couple of portable morgues.

Woolsey Fire 94,000 acres. 30% contained. Full containment expected later this week. Estimated 435 structures destroyed, but assessment is still ongoing. Two fatalities.

A number of evacuation orders have been lifted.

83% of all National Parks Service land in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area has been burned by the Woolsey Fire. All National Parks Service lands in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area are closed to public entry for safety.

Highway 101 is open. Highway 1 (Pacific Coast Highway) still closed.

Unfortunately, red flag warning for fire danger continues through Wednesday.

Thank goodness it's near winter and not high summer! But that doesn't seem to make too much difference ... extremely low moisture content and high winds are enough. Is the weather actually "hot" nutrax?

Not nutrax, but down here in Southern California yes it is hot (80F Sunday where I live, 2 miles from the Pacific) but 75F yesterday and rest of this week. In downtown LA of course it is hotter, in the 80s with low humidity. Nutrax I believe is in the SF area so her weather may be different. Send rain please.

We’ve actually had cool nights and mild days in terms of temperatures. Highs in the 60-70 F /16-21 C range; lows in the 40s (7-10). Paradise is at about 1800 ft/550 m elevation, so is cooler. Highest mountains have had freezing temps, which at least means that ski resorts can make snow.

Smoke acts like cloud cover to keep the sun from heating during the day. A couple of days when we didn’t get smoke until mid afternoon, I could see the temperature drop by about 5F once the sky turned darker. A lot of schools & colleges have cancelled classes and fire depts are distributing masks. The black humor joke is that we don’t have snow days; we have smoke days.

Air quality here is only “unhealthy” right now and won’t reach “very unhealthy” until this afternoon.
