Is there an online journey planner for the NYC subway system?
London have one London Journey Planner that allows you to see how to get from A to B. It's not perfect, but helps a lot.

SORRY!
I found something..... NYC Route Planner
Just wasn't thinking America when I was searching before.

This will sound strange, but half the fun of riding the subways as a tourist is looking at the maps in the stations and figuring out how to get there. It's not very difficult, and the trains and stations are far cleaner and far safer today than they were the first time I visited New York 27 years ago.
NYC is much more logically set out than London is, especially if (as most visitors do) you confine youself to Manhattan. For the most part you need to remember that the avenues go (roughly) north-south and the streets go (roughly) east-west, and that (north of Houston Street) they are almost all numbered. Most New Yorkers don't need maps, even when going into unfamiliar neighbourhoods; most Londoners do need them when going out of known territory.

Go to the MTA website, www.mta.info/ and click on the link on the left hand side to take you to the NYC Transit page.
They have a trip planner that includes buses and subway.
I'm going to NY in May and the trip planner has been a godsend!!!
