It's a four-hour drive, so I would spend the night in Bemidji which is a nice college town with the blonde-haired descendents of the original Swedish settlers. Or you could stay in the historic lodge there in the state park. There are bears and possibly wolves in the park, a virgin stand of red pines, and a bike path around the lake.
