Lake Placid

I was hoping to go there on March 9 or 10. Almost everything in town seems to be booked. Travelocity etc. show different availability every day--it seems pretty hit or miss. Is that typical for a winter weekend or is something going on there those dates? I checked the calendar of events on what appeared to be an official town website, and didn't see anything. I don't know the area, so maybe there's someplace to stay nearby? The Point in Lake Saranac is definitely too expensive (though my parents loved it) as are any other properties in that price range, but I am willing to consider most other levels of places.
