I have done the preliminary search, and would like additional information off the forum on accommodations on both, the Big Island and Kaua'i.

We will be a family of four looking for weekly accommodations for 3 weeks (either 3 full weeks on the Big Island or 2 weeks on the Big Island with 1 week on Kaua'i). Our flight arrives in Kona mid December 2007, and we leave Kona early January 2008.

Does any TT contributers have some "clean but value for the money" places to suggest? We are not really resort people, and we are aware of the various condo search engines. However, has anyone stayed at a few places on either island that they can recommend.

We obviously have to get our bookings for Christmas going soon, or have difficulty with room at the inn. I have some leads, but am looking for many more. Thanks in advance.

Kohala's Guest House (Big Island) might be a nice place to stay for a while. Its near the end of the road, past Hawi. Its a duplex with 2br on each side. Lovely area. We paid $50/night for a room, but we had the whole place to ourselves. Its listed in the LP guide.

I rented a 2 BR cottage on Kauai through Garden Island Rentals and they seemed to have a lot of choices. The cottage was really cute, well located near Baby Beach, very clean.

hawaiibnb.com, vrbo.com, and alternativehawaii.com will set you up nicely.

ejpii.

I have these search engines - and more. Please read the OP. If you can recommend an actual place to stay (that you have actually stayed at), then it would be really appreciated. Already have look at these websites and that of the Reveal guidebooks.

Does anyone else have a place they can recommend on either the Big Island or Kaua'i?

Pineapple Park has decent 3 budget accomodations on TBI. Most of the travellers there are backpackers and low end younger people. But I'm near 50 and have had a great time there with others as well as alone. Most recently stayed at the Volcano one last year. The new one in Hilo is downtown and has kayak rentals. The volcano one isn't actually in Volcano, but in Kurtistown as I recall, but is close enough to give easy access to the park. The Kona one likewise isn't in Kona but closer to Captian Cook. It offers Kayaks and other watersports stuff as well.

I understand what you are saying about sepcifics, but both the alternativehawaii and hawaiibnb sites have always been honestly described and accurate-and give enough info-to determine what you want for yourself. I've used each at least 8 or 10 times and not had a bad stay yet. I always figure the pics and looking at multiple reviews might be better for a specific traveller than anything I say. At least thats the way it has worked for me. FWIW I live in Hawaii part time and am there 5 or 6 times a year on average.

You are going to be there during the peak Christmas holiday season, so rates may be higher than you have expected.

Oh they will be higher than expected. However, I am looking for something that is a good base for a family that can beach on some days, and trek on others.
