we (2 ppl) are going to spend a nite in the grand canyon. we've hired a car and are driving from vegas.

we want to see the south rim i know there is a shuttle bus but can we drive around hermits rest, desert view, Hopi, Mohave, and Pima Points???

a lot of the treks are overnight and intensive - are there any other walks that we can do at a more plesant pace for 2-3 hours?

Yeah, there are a ton of easier day hikes. qwovadis's recommendation is one of the best. Pretty much all of the trails are worth doing, but some the payoff is further away. If you feel ambitious, walk down steep South Kaibab to the Tonto trail, make a left and walk up Bright Angel. It'll take about 6 hours of solid hiking, but the views both ways are tremendous and BA has water and restrooms in a couple of palces. One of the regulars here is a tourguide there and will be able to help out more. Asking the rangers whats they recommend is always a good idea.

I love the Dripping Springs hike, but it might take more than 3 hours. You might consider South Kaibab to Cedar Ridge, perfect for a 2-3 hour hike and great views. The easiest option is take the shuttle bus towards Hermit, be dropped off at one viewpoint and hike the rim trail for as long as you like, and then catch the shuttle back from another - mostly flat and east walking.

Yup, South Kaibab trail to Cedar Ridge is great. It was the first hike I did there. After that I was hooked. I later returned and walked it from rim to rim.

If you're planning to stay in one of the concession lodges right on the South Rim, book it well ahead. This is especially true during the Summer. The best one, El Tovar can book up months in advance. Otherwise, you'll be staying outside the park.
