I am from the U.K and I was thinking of going to New York during the Easter period but I have been told it will be very expensive. I am a teacher so I don’t have a choice. Has anyone been at this time of year? Is it a good time to go?

There is no such thing as a bad time to come to NYC. Easter is early in April, so it should be around 45-50 degrees F. However, it might rain a good amount if you don't mind that.

at the moment, i'm pessimistic due to the freakin' freezing temperatures and total slushfest on the sidewalks, but i'm sure things will have to improve by April. right? right!

spring is a wonderful time of year to visit new york, and relatively untouristed. you do see a few crowds of kids on spring break, but all in all it's not like either Christmas or the summer vacation season. i can't speak for flight costs or hotel rates, but as a local i don't feel that things are "more expensive" at that time of year than any other.

NYC is always expensive; but Easter not more so than any other period. In fact NYC is at its best during holiday periods. So enjoy your trip.

just to let you know, Easter is not a huge holiday here. there's the easter parade, and a lot of companies give good friday off, but all in all it's not a holiday that has a strong "holiday vibe" in the streets in the way that Christmas, Halloween, Thanksgiving, St. Patrick's Day, etc. are.

According to expedia.co.uk flights from London to New York at Easter (outbound 5th April, returning on 9th April) are around £360 with AA (or £40 less if you fly via Washington DC with United). Does that strike you as expensive?

With the extremely favorable exchange rate, I can't see how you can go wrong any time of year. Anyway, Easter's rather late this year...most of the Spring Break stuff will have already happened, and in any case, students and families tend to flock south during Easter break...I've never noticed a surge in rates at that time in NYC. Hotel rates there steep anytime, but again, with the strength of the pound against the dollar, you should be able to afford it.

Flights starting from there will be higher because it is a major holiday for you guys.

Correction...it's really never referred to as "Easter Break"...just Spring Break, which often just happens to coincide with Easter, which as stated (#4) really isn't much of a public holiday since it falls on a Sunday. A handful of businesses and Catholic schools might shut down for good Friday, but that's about it. Apart from the pastel candy, colored eggs and bunny displays in drugstores and a little more buzz than usual in the ethnic bakeries and churches, you won't notice it much.

I have been to Italy for Easter, and everything was super crowded and hotels charged the highest prices of the year, etc. Easter in the US is nothing like that. It isn't a three-day holiday here, so there is little holiday travel and as others have said, you won't see much different from any other spring weekend.
