I will be spending a week in Santa Fe for the first time. Should I also plan to visit Taos or is it too much traveling? If yes, should I plan to stay overnight at least in Taos? Any great hiking areas? We'll be there the first week of July. And any recommendations for a place to stay under 100? Thanks

Yes go to Taos, it's not that far, overnight isn't necessary but could be done. I can't tell you about hiking or where to stay cheap. I went the princess route myself.

Agree, go to Taos. Bandelier National Park for hikes

Taos is an easy day trip from Santa Fe, though you could certainly stay overnight.

I agree about Bandelier National Monument, one of my favorite places in northern NM and an easy drive from Santa Fe. Besides the cave dwellings there are several easy hikes along established trails.

Another drive you might enjoy is the Turquoise Trail through the mountains south of Santa Fe. Nice scenery and lots of galleries and artists' studios to visit. Make the side trip to Sandía Crest for a panoramic view from 10,000 feet. This route will eventually take you to Albuquerque, and you could return to Santa Fe via I-25.

Taos would be a nice daytrip. My friend has an earthship there- definitely worth checking out the community and I think that they rent some of the houses out on a nightly basis but I'm not sure how much it'd cost: google earthships in taos for more information.

How much hiking do you want to do? You could go to Wheeler Peak, a bit northeast of Taos; there's a gorgeous trail to the top (13,000 ft- pretty strenuous) and you could even camp there for the night. You could also find some hot springs to hike to- I used to go to the Jemez ones near Bandelier but they'd be a bit out of the way for you and I think there are at least a couple of easily accessible ones near Taos. Bandelier is a good option too, especially if you'd like to see some Anasazi ruins.

A week in Santa Fe? Absent a specific reason to spend that much time, I think it's a bit much. The place is worth a couple of days, tops.

I liked Taos even more than Sante Fe. The old part of Albuquerque is also very beautiful. Have fun.

Even at our 7000 ft.elevation The first week of July will be the hottest time of year...A good wide brim hat & cover up clothes will help for sun exposure. There are several hikes in the foothills at Santa Fe's Eastern limits...Take a day to see Taos & spend the night at the Ski Valley nearby & hike there. Or pamper yourself & overnight at Ojo Calante Hot Springs...Spa,cabins,camping & good food service..Visit Bandelier on the backhaul to Santa Fe.Drive the scenic 14 on your way So. to ABQ...happy trails ..carracar
