Chicago has fantastic music venues of probably every type of sound, great restaurants and awesome architecture if your into that, great city, one of the best.
It will be cold.....highly recommend a few nights.
It's a bit different than Dubuque, think you'll like it!

OK, if you're going to visit a friend (in Dubuque), that changes the scenario a bit. I didn't mean to disparage the town either but without that missing piece of info, it had me scratching my head as it's so completely different than Chicago!
Go and have good time! :O)

"there be any point in spending the money getting there?" I am also sure you would be spending a lot more money in Chicago, as compared to Dubuque. Enjoy your trip with your friend.

When setting out on a journey, do not seek advice from those who have never left home.

Its winter.

Just getting from Dubuque to Chicago mid December would be tough if it snows. Its 3 hours, plus rush hour.

Chicago is a huge city with a vibrant downtown and a big Christmas scene on Michigan avenue. It is a very dynamic city that sees 14 million tourist a year.

Dubuque is a small midwestern city with a small downtown of a few streets and a few hotels, its not in any way comparable to Chicago anymore than New Zealand is similar to China.
