hello!

will be in SF in May through June & want to see: wine country, bit of the coast, LA, Las Vegas, Grand Canyon & some spectacular desert scenery.....am a bit befuddled as to how i might line this up with a rented car -- it'll be me, the wife and an 11-yr-old .....how much are average car rentals by the week? & how many weeks to do all this? thanks very much for your help!

Impossible to give average rental prices without knowing what kind of car you want and what kind of discounts you may get. You can easily find prices yourself by using the Web sites of various rental companies (e.g., Hertz, National, Budget, Dollar) or airline Web sites. You also donot say how long you want to be on the road. You mention being in SF May and June. How much of that time do you want to drive? You could drive through wine country, go to Yosemite, over Tioga Pass, down Hwy 395, across Death Valley to Las Vegas, then to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon (and maybe Zion and Bryce), then to L.A. and up the coast to SF, BUT that will be a lot of driving, and you will be in popular places (e.g., Yosemite, GC, coast) during peak vacation times. Would need to reserve in advance. A bit befuddles as to how yo line what up? Try AAA for help on planning your itinerary.

Your question is asked often enough that I decided to write FAQ entry 214: "Grand Tour: California, Vegas, Grand Canyon, Zion and Bryce." For rental car info., see FAQ entry 148: "Tips on Renting a Car in the U.S. and Driving It Here"
