Me and a friend will be doing a road trip later in the year and as it happens we hit upon the idea of - while we're there, let's get up close and personal with a bit of history in South Dakota, and, scale a real 'face' at the same time. We figure on staying in Keystone for a couple of days and using that as a base and then spend a couple of days climbing in the area. I've tried google but there doesn't appear to be too many climbing guides or tours listed. Any ideas or hints would be well appreciated as would a choice of face. Is it true that George has a great viewing platform/ rest area in either nostril on the ascent approach? That would be cool and something not to be sneezed at. Sorry. If you've done it, which is the preferred head option in your opinion?

I was going to say climbing the faces is almost certainly illegal. If somebody was driving a bolt under Washington's nose and the nose broke off, imagine the complaints.

Bwa ha ha. My preferred "head" option has nothing to do with a dead President!
:p

I've been there and found hiking to be very limited, except for some trails that meander around the sight for good photo ops. Look up some hikes in the Black Hills near the area. There's a beautiful lake between Rushmore and Deadwood, and on the other side of Mt Rushmore many trails and forests without the tacky tourist shops.
