We will be in the east coast area mid August and are planning a road trip across to California. I've looked into hiring an RV(or something similar) for a month and it's looking quite expensive - would it be better to buy something? Ideally it would need be something like a camper so we can use it for accomodation also. Is it stupid to think we could buy something? If it comes to it, we can go bus rain but thought this would be much more fun!
Any advise would be helpful. Thanks

You will find that buying a camper, licensing & insuring it & then trying to re-sell after only a month is simply not worth the effort or expense. Expensive it may be, but rental makes more sense. Considering the cost of fuel, renting a car or SUV & spending the difference on motels may make more sense.

yeah, those campers never made sense to me. Motels in most of the US are cheap, for the money you save on gas alone by driving a small car you can stay in a motel and have a maid clean up your mess.

If you're going to be in New York City, go across the river to New Jersey to get a car...cheaper taxes.

GASOLINE ALONE for those things makes them not worth it.
