If you are looking into trekking in the arctic or other remote areas of Alaska, your big expense will be getting flown in to where ever you want to start from. Just like anywhere else, you time in the backcountry will be limited by the amount of food you are willing to carry. You could arrange food drops with a bush pilot. Quite a few people do a combination float on a river and trek.

For cheap trekking options available by bus or shuttle from Anchorage check out the Chugach Mountains, Resurrection Pass trail or Denali State Park.

2

I loved trekking in the Wrangell St. Elias National Park. Amazing vistas, beautiful weather, fascinating old mine towns. Bonanza mine trail is superb!

Most hikers are unguided except for non-resident hunters who are required by law to have a guide in many instances.

As #1 says the flight in will probably be the biggest expense. You could also get a canoe and putz around in the Kenai peninsula.

Get a hold of a copy of "Hiking in Alaska" by Jim Dufresne. Get back to us when you have some focused questions.

If you already have your gear, a car, and some trail mix, it costs very little. If you want to stay in a backcountry cabin (35-45$/night). Or if you go to places only reached by plane, boat, or snowmachine, and eat gourmet food then it will cost more.
