Road Trip advice Florida to Las vagasCountry forums / United States of America / United States
Hi I was hoping to get advice and tips. We are going to Florida in November 2018 and was thinking on doing a long road trip prior, from Las Vagas to florida going on route 66. Would this be a good idea or any other suggestions for a good road trip Thanks Liz
I wouldn't drive from Miami to Las Vegas. How much time do you have? I would fly from Miami (MIA or FLL) to New Orleans for 3-4 nights, then fly to Las Vegas for two weeks, and do a wonderful loop through the beautiful national parks, back to Las Vegas. Part of that loop takes you along part of the "old" Route 66 - more than enough to get a feel for it. If you have time, you could then drive to Los Angeles over two days via Death Valley. | 1
First tip is route 66 goes nowhere near Florida. Of course you can you meet it at some point as you head west. How long have you got? It is a long drive but certainly could be an interesting one. | 2
Parts of it might be interesting (which is always an interesting word when used to describe things). but I would take a huge amount of convincing that it is even remotely the best way to spend time and money - if you have a couple of weeks loose in America. | 3
You might but you are not the poster or me for that matter. But who said a couple of weeks. | 4
Not sure I fully understand the point. But we have driven through coastal Mississippi State and it was awfully dull - and that's probably typical of the whole eastern half of the trip, in terms of interest. And the western dry part improves not much. Texas anyone? I assumed a couple of weeks if they're contemplating such a drive ... I don't think that's particularly controversial. | 5
I actually see now you're heading from Las Vegas to Miami, rather than the other way round. Are you going to Miami to catch a cruise? Anyway - just reverse what I said, starting from LAX, drive to Las Vegas over two days, do a two-week loop, see New Orleans, and so on. | 6
RT66 is boring and time consuming. Driving the interstates is as boring and no fun. Especially Texas. The only worthwhile area to stop and see, is New Orleans and I would fly there as a 2-3 nighter. Possibly consider the Natchez Trail area too...(Further north) | 7
How long do you have for this trip and what are your dates, important for a road trip especially out west. Your best bet for a nice road trip is the southwest, it still has some decent parts of Rte.66 left, the majority of it is now interstate. Mostly boring and tedious all the way to Chicago. Recommend, depending on how much time you have, do a nice loop out of LV then fly to Florida. Once you pass New Mexico the road trip from LV to Florida is absolutely horrible, ugly scenery, a complete waste of time and money. | 8
I've actually driven from Las Vegas NV to Punta Gorda Fl. I would also consider "US-66" (it no longer exists as a federal highway) to be one of the "meanders." You'll only be on I-40, what used to be US-66, for the few miles between Kingman AZ and the junction of I-40 and US-93 if you stay on the most direct route. Depending on what you want to see, how many days you have for the trip, and how many hours a day you are able/willing to drive, I could suggest some "meanders." | 9
BY FAR the best parts of old Rt. 66 are between roughly between Las Vegas and Flagstaff. Specifically, the section over the Black Range between Oatman and Kingman, AZ and the section between Kingman and Seligman via Peach Springs. The rest is mostly covered by interstate highway, with scattered kitschy memorabilia in towns along the way. There area a few nice quiet sections of "really old" Rt. 66 in New Mexico, the pre-1937 alignment, before it was paved. But whatever. Unless you have a very specific interest in Rt. 66 history, its really a terrible organizing theme for a road trip. Rt. 66 wasn't established because it was the most scenically interesting route west, it was simply the most efficient and feasible route available at the time. Along most of its length, its absolutely and painfully dull.
Almost anything else in the southwest would be superior. In November you might consider AZ and New Mexico with an emphasis on the southern parts of those states. East of New Mexico, points of interest are few and far between, on pretty much any route you take. But we don't know how much time you have or what you're interests are, so its hard to dig too far into specifics. So, what are you looking to see and do? how much time do you have? | 10
Thank you for the info. Coming from Australia we will be spending to 2 weeks in orlando. Not sure if we will go to las Vagas first or Orlando. We also wanted to go to las Vagas but only really have a little over a week. We thought I road trip would be nice | 11

We're from Australia, and have driven very extensively in the US + Canada. There are some wonderful road trips - some of the very best in the western world - but few would suggest that Orlando <> Las Vegas is among them, Lots of fairly featureless rural country, and then congested urban areas. If you advise the actual time for the road bit, and how many nights you can manage, then people can offer attractive itineraries. And two weeks in Orlando sounds generous - do you have friends or family there? | 13

You do not have to reply to every poster - and especially not with a copy & paste! | 15
Thank you. It sounds like I will be ditching route 66 than. We will be spending 2 weeks in orlando but would like to visit las Vagas too. Probably go las Vagas first but wanted to do a little road trip too October November | 16
Intersting thank you. I dont mind doing long hours of driving. Maybe some interesting sight seeing and some culture | 17
Oh Okay I just thought it was polite to respond with a reply | 18
It certainly is polite, but no-one expects it, and it just clogs up the thread. A thank-you at the end is sufficient (and of course appreciated!). | 19
You have ample opportunities for a "little road trip" using Orlando and/or Las Vegas as a base without the long slog across I-10. South Florida offers everything from the Kennedy Space Center to South Beach to Everglades National Park to The Keys and Key West plus a half hundred more depending on your tastes. Las Vegas offers a dozen or more spectacular national and state parks within a day's drive. I recommend Google, Rand-MacNally, and AAA as resources to plan a "little road trip." | 20
US66 basically no longer exists - mostly interstate now (I eshew Interstates). | 21
