hi folks

im trying to decide whether to spend an entire weekend in Caracas or a weekend in Puerto Colombia?

we want to experience Venezuelans as much as possible and were maybe thinking that Puerto colombia is a destination for foreign tourists and backpackers.... is this true?

also can anyone suggest any venues in Puerto colombia for accommodation and for partying?

Also has anyone been to los trincheras for the hot springs? any suggestions on it? i would love to go as we travel west to Merida but would like to hear any experiences of the place
any help would be great
thanks again!

Puerto Colombia is a small beach town right beside choroni that pretty much lives on tourism. Getting there is not straightforward and actually a little complicated but the beaches are nice and you'll always find people playing and dancing to african drums on the beach at night. Its a cool experience but that's as close as you get to partying unless you walk up to a private party probably around a truck with music.
Unless you plan it well (best thing would be to have a posada -kind of like a small hotel- arrange everything for you), I would suggest staying in Caracas and going to San Ignacio mall or Las Mercedes for some nightlife. There wouldnt be many day plans I would safely suggest for a Tourist in Caracas, probably El Hatillo or Sambil Mall to check out the diversity in Venezuelan People.
Hope you enjoy your trip.

Why not try going straight to Las Trincheras. It's a great place and very cheap. Around €2 for the whole day. They have a few different pools from warm to hot to scorchio. They have steam rooms and in the scorchio pool its possible to get mud if your brave enough. If you want to spend the night there its quite cheap and there are all kinds of ways to pamper yourself; if thats what your into. massage etc... You may also see some monkeys trying to steal food and drink from near the mud pool. Mon - Fri during the day it is quite empty and evenings and weekends it is very busy with lots of Venezuelans traveling from Caracas for the health benefits. Its good for arthritis and skin conditions .
Not too far from Las Trincheras are the beaches Tucacas(1 1/2 hr) and a little further Chichiriviche (2 hr) .
I definatley would go to the latter. Have a look at Cayo Sal in google earth. Leave Caracas for another day.

Hello,

Choroni/Puerto Colombia attracts local and foreign turist alike. Great weekend getaway, especially if the weather is nice. If has been raining you need to check up on the road conditions before heading out to Choroni. You can get there either in a private car transfer, which would work out more expensive but is safer, quicker and a lot less of a hassle, or you can get the bus to La Bandera bus station in Caracas (avoid walkign there at night) from there get the bus to Maracay and then get the bus to Choroni. Take some dramamine tablets if you need to for the road is very windy. The night life in Choorni is also good. The locals dancing to the beat of the ''tambores'' - afro-caribbean drums. You might just even have a go yourself if you're up to it. There is another little joint where the going gets good, that's Bar Rumba, close to the Malecon. From Choroni/Puerto Colombia you may get boats to different other beaches. No problem at all. You can get to Uricao, valle seco, Chuao, Cepe and my favourite Tuja.

As for las Trincheras, nice place to relax. Gets busy at weekends and holidays though.

Choroni and Las Trincheras beat stayingin Caracas anyday. If you do stay in Caracas, check the Avila National Park.Pico Naiguata being the highest point on the mountain where you can enjoy a great view of Caracas and the Caribbean sea, weather permitting. Mind you, it is a very steep climb. Alternatively there are several day trips from Caracas you can look into such as the Alfredo Jahn Cave system, great fun, not for the faint hearted.

Hope you findmy information of use.

All the best
