Taking overnight busses is not as dangerous or complex as some may make it out to be. However, you need to be very aware that they will be very, very cold. And I don't mean cold. I mean freezing. Antarctica style.

The reason given is that this will ensure that passengers don't get ill on the overnight journeys on roads which can be circuitous and potholed. Whether or not this is the best way to address the problem is another question entirely. When you see all the Venezuelans donning coats, hats, gloves, and pullovers, you'll know why...

Don't go unprepared - dress for the Arctic. You'll be glad you did!

hah!
i remember the bus from sta elena to c bolivar. picked us up on the road at night and really kept the seats open for us. amazing in that!
but, like walking into a freezer. we pulled out everything we had. i had my (thankfully dry) towel over my head and wore all i could. all the other passengers were indeed dressed for antarctic exploration!!

we always (try) to steal the blankets from the airplane when arriving in south or central america, they do the trick, or just take your sleeping bag in the bus

Yes Venezuelan buses are very cold but also very loud.... they love to pump that latino music for hours on end! So take a blanket and ear plugs

Yes, buses in Venezuela are this freezing all year long. I don't know how it is in our neigbor countries.

Regarding anoying music on board... it depends on the company you travel with. Some companies have very strict rules and their employees are enforced to follow them. For instance: Rodovías de Venezuela, Aeroexpresos Ejecutivos, Pelican Express... They run long-distance routes.

If you are travelling a local or short distance route or a "kind-of-third-world" company, it's usual to go on board of one of those noisy buses.
