Hello colleagues,

we are planning to go to Venezuela end of February - starting in Isla Margarita for a week´s windsurfing. So we have about two weeks to travel, what do you suggest as the best places to visit? Are Canaima/the angel falls worth it in march (as someone suggested not to go during the dry season)? Does anybody know good spots to go scuba diving off Isla Margarita or the main land or would it be worth to go to Los Roques (seems quite expensive)?
Thanks for suggestions and ideas!

Hi,
Canaima / Angel Falls is definitely better in the wet season as you then can travel up the river by canoe (GREAT experience).
I'd suggest a trip to the Gran Sabana in dry season - it's the most marvellous scenery. I was there in wet season, so I got WET, why dry season probably is to prefer :-) You can hike Roraima (didn't do it though) or just explore the small villages, campamentos and fantastic tepuis between El Dorado and Santa Elena de Uairen.
Or try a canoe trip on Rio Caura including the Para Falls, we're going to do that in february, because Caura River has water enough all year round (e.g. check Gekko-Tours).
Of course I hear a lot good stuff about Merida in the Andes (haven't been there yet), where you can hike, paraglide, go with the Teleferico and a bunch of other things.
We're also going to Parque Nacional Henri Pittier in the North where there's a lot of small beaches, and I also heard good about the area of Morrocoy / Chichiriviche...
Don't know a thing about scuba diving :-)
Have a great trip!!!

The peninsular near Santa Ana de Coro is reputed to offer superb windsurfing. Coro is beautiful and SAFE. You can stroll the Historic district in the evening withouit getting mugged - unusual for a Venezuelan city. Were I younger, I would spend months based in Santa Elena, also safe and fun (I got kidnapped see BLOG at www.simongandolfi.com ) and the Gran Sabana is magnificent. At 75, I am too old to go scrambling up table mountains, a great regret. I rode through on my Honda in November/December on the way north from Tierra del Fuego.
Have fun
