Hi,

I have read a lot about the exchange rate being best if you change your dollars on the black market. How do I do this and where do I go? We arrive in Caracas on 25th July and aim to leave for Puerto la Cruz straight away by bus. I will change some dollars at the airport to pay for taxi and bus.

Is it best to change most of my dollars in Puerto La Cruz? We hope to stay here for one night, before moving on to Mochima the following day. Are there a lot of places to change money on the black market? How do I recognise the best places to change money?

What is the exchange rate on the black market at the minute?

Thanks.

Hi.

The Bolivar Fuerte continues to lose ground against the US dollar. As of yesterday it was trading at 6.3 BsF to 1 USD. This is the 'official' black market rate, be satisfied if you can get a few points below this, say 5.8 is fine. The best place to do this is at travel agencies, hotels or jewellery shops. Ask around and get a few quotes before you commit.

The airport is more of a problem. Upon leaving the airport you will be approached by guys, cleaning or security guys, offering to change money. They offer a poor rate (4, bargain with them to 4.5 or maybe 5) but you may need to cop this to pay for the taxi and bus (150 BsF taxi + 60 each bus trip? Not sure exactly). That's ok, change $50 or so, then when you have some time later you shop around in Puerto la Cruz for the best price.

The whole thing is a damn hassle, especially compared to countries like Colombia with 'normal', floated currencies. Chavez's offical rate of 2.1 BsF to the dollar is just silly.

Needless to say DO NOT use ATMs in Venezuela, you will get the offical rate.

Hello
In Puerto La Cruz , take a stroll down the sea front boulevard Paseo Colon where there is several tourist hotels and restaurants, you will get offers of currency changing. Try to change tho with someone associated with an establishment, ask a few questions and dont rush into the first offer

have a good trip
