Apologies, but this is nothing more than a shameless rant. I need somewhere to vent.

So to cross from Boa Vista to Venezuela you need a tourist card. Being a smart tourist I tried to get this in advance at the embassy in Suriname. They told me however that "You don't need a visa, and tourist cards are available at all points of entry, even land ones, so we don't stock any". I was a little sceptical so I went to the embassy in Guyana, same story. So, if I needed one I could have got a visa, but not a tourist card.

Several days later my bus across Guyana arrives a little later than planned (as they do), and I arrived at the Venezuela consulate in Boa Vista half an hour after closing on a Friday. There was still someone there who kindly informed me that tourist cards are not available at the border, and I must wait until Monday. Next bus will then be 7.30am Tuesday.

Less than impressed. This border, in effect, takes two days to cross and is only open M-F.

Does anyone think it is worth heading to the border anyway, or will this just cause me more problems with forced re-entry into Brazil or when I leave Venezuela?

It turns out there are share taxis to the border, and the odd bus to the Brazil side, but not actually across it. Good news.

So, I crossed the border with a Dutch guy who seemed to do just fine without the tourist card. Aahhhh. Guess I wasted a few days in Boa Vista - at least I have a pretty but of paper!
