Is it safe to stay in a hotel or homestay at Sabana Grande area (around Recreo shopping mall)? The 2007 edition of the guidebook says it's not safe after dark but I read somewhere online that it is safe since 2008 because of more police.

Personally I will totally avoid it at night. If you want to go out at night, have your hotel call a taxi for you.

I'm not to sure about the police making it safer. More often than not they give tourists a hard time, especially in that area. I myself get harrased by them when in the area, just because I look foreign. Nevertheless, when they hear mne speak spanish they pull off as they immediatley notice I'm local. If I were you look for somewhere somewhat safer such as Altamira, where the Police are much nicer (different police force).
