Hi does any one know what the price to get either a taxi from airport to La Bandera Bus terminal, as I want to get a Bus overnight straight away to Merida.
Or How much for public bus in to Centre from Airport (last stop park central) and a taxi from there to La bandera Bus terminal?
Any advice on which taxis I should be looking to get and prices would be very helpful!

I land at app. 3.30pm on a tue, and I know night buses run from 6-9pm from La Bandera to Merida,
has as anyone done either of these options and found it managable with Jet lag and poor spanish?
Also times to get from airport to Bus terminal for each method?

Any info would be great cheers

In the arrival hall there are people with IDs and they will help you to find a taxi. Don't affraid them. Remember to change money first.
Official taxis are black Ford Explorers and I guess that the price to Bandera should be about 30-40$. There are also infrequent minibuses without any plate, but they are also official transport from Parque Central to airport. Those guys with IDs will help you to find one. Cost to airport is 15BsF, from airport I paid 25BsF to terminal Rodovias.

If you go by metro to Bandera remember that the terminal is about 350m from metro station and is not visible. Neighbourhood is not really nice. You should see two petrol stations, go in that direction, if you pass them you will see the terminal.

Paddy,
I'm a Polish national living for a long time in Galway now. We're flying to Caracas (with my wife) on 7th December and stay in Venezuela for a month. We plan on staying first two/three nights in Macuto instead of Caracas for safety reasons. In general we don't have detailed itinerary, but would like to visit Isla de Margarita, Ciudad Bolivar + Salto Angel, Los Llanos, Merida, Coro, Henri Pittier NP. Haven't thought yet where we're gonna spend Christmas and New Years Eve. If you fear you're gonna feel alone over Christmas and New Years' we can perhaps join the forces and travel Venezuela together.
It wouldn't be a bad idea to create a group of 4-6 people to travel together, since it is not the safest country in the world. If you need very little to keep the smile on your face (like us), then why not getting together? What do u think? Anyone out there interested?

Indeed Caracas doesn't look like a safest place, but we were walking after dark and nothing happened.
Outside Caracas in my opinion it's very safe, people are friendly and we walked everywhere (me and my girlfriend) after dark and nobody even looked strangely at us.
I wouldn't worry about safety in Venezuela, usual precautions are enough.

You should not have a problem if you use one of the official taxis. Just remember - it is South America. Quite hectic in the bus terminals and a bit frightening if you have jet-lag and do not speak the language well. Just concentrate on your surroundings and ignore the aggressive ones.

Change your money at the airport downstairs at the car rental agencies. I do not remember which one I used but I did not go with the first person with ID who approached me. Here again just go straight downstairs and the taxis are just outside at the same level.

I do not recommend the bus if you don't speak the language well.

for the official/city buses than will run between airport and Caracas, Is Park Central the last stop? Does anyone know how much taxi sould cost from Park Cental to La bander, (or general short taxi run in City cente?). Is the tourist information office in Caracas airport reguarly open, are they any good? Should probably be able to find most info out of them if stuck if they open.
Cheers for info everyone!

Parque Central is the last stop (we could actually stay in the bus and the driver brought us to the Rodovias-terminal afterwards. But I'm not sure whether that's his usual route on the way back to the airport).

Taxis in the center are around 20Bs (~6USD) duringt the day and 30Bs during night.

Hey incase anyone wanted a follow up, arrived in Caracas two days ago, went to the domestic Terminal and got $250 changed at rate of 4.4BLV to $1 took bit of arguing, they started at 3.8 I started at 5 we agreed at 4.4BLV to the 1$, straight out side there was a bus terminal with buses heading for Park _Central last stop, signs easy to follow! (literally striaght out side domestic terminal look right) Bus was 15BLV just over $3, took ages to fill up (leaves when at least half full) I got on at 4.40pm bus left at about 5.20pm, takes about an hour to get into Park Central I was the last left on the bus, the traffic was really heavey (must be rush hour) it was completly dark as it was night. The driver told me to get off (turns out one block from park central but close enough) Standing at the metro at Park Central I tried for bout half hour to get taxi and hardly any stopped and the ones that did didn't want to take me to La Bandera bus terminal from hand gestures and annoyed looks I guess the trafic was one way on that main road, extremly heavey and Bandera was the wrong way so ended up having to try and figure out the metro.
Of which was quite easy to read and figure out I had to go one stop back to Zone Rental or something like that, change lines then 3 stops to La Bandera. Seemed safe and clean. When you get o La bandera stop, exit and as you pass throught the barriers, take the left exit. From there it was a short 5min walk to the left. Yes it was dodgey looking but alot of people about and I stop to ask a few people to make sure I was going the right way and they helped and I got there grand, you pass about 3 or 4 petrol stations then you'll know youre at the bus terminal, busy lots of people coming and going. Walk in and head to the very top, managed to get on to the 8.30pm bus, cost me 72 BLV one way (bout $20). Busses are freezing everyone says it and they aint kidding, I had two jumbers which was ok but my ears and head got freezing so ended up putting my day pack on my head (no joke poeple had gloves and scarfs I had day pack lol)
I felt reasonably safe walking about metro and the Bus terminal, however I met a french guy on the bus did the exact same thing as me, except he stopped to ask a uniformed police or offical for direction, they took him to a police bus "searched" his bag swiped his brand new 300euro camera and sent him on his way!
I may have been lucky or not but a good tip is not to ask officials (police or army) where to go I usually asked women, particuarly women chatting of husband and wife walking along less risky, remember always smile loads and try and get out quickly and clearly what you want people are wary of you too (and a por va vor at the end always helps) I found however the people in the metro Kiosks were friendly and helpful, they have no authority to stop and search you so safe enough to aproach for info!
Anyways will write soon,
