Hey, heading to Merida for the 3nd Dec, can anyone reccomend a posada that has a good party atmosphere about it? Does anyone know what the current price you should be paying for posada in Merida? (With the dollar's strength and inflation in Venezuela, I get the impression LP's prices aren't that accurate?)

Plus as I intend to do a treck or some rafting when I get there but havent anything booked was just wandering if its ok to just book for a couple days in Posada incase I want do a trip straight way or do you need to book in advance for all the nigts you intend to stay?

Also if anyone has any info about the rafting or trecking tours you can do, any experiences, are there any must do things, and are there any days tours company dont operate on on etc...?

Cheers for you help

Hi Iris_womble?
From the middle of december start the high season than it may be more crowdy and more expensive. It will be rare if the prices are the same as the LP.
The prices go up every time in Venezuela.
That's why the goverment made a "paralelo dolar" change special for tourists.....

Have a nice time in Venezuela

Hi Theo,
Please allow me to correct you: The government's policies of the paralell US $ market rate has nothing to do with tourists. It's a measure implemented to stop the the flight of capital leaving Vzla. You see the BsF loses value on a daily basis, so nobody wants BsF. The US $ is a more stable currency therefore evrybody would exchage their BsF to US $ and keep them in a bank outside Vzla. This is known as capital flight. In order to stop this, the government imposed exchange controls; thereby creating a vlack market.

As for posadas in Merida, there are several of different standards. December is the high season, so prices will be higher, maybe even doble than what it syas in the LP book. Keep safe, plenty of Vzlans looking for a cold Christmas in Dec. so Merida will be packed full. Book in advance.

All the best,

Thomas

In May of 05 I stayed at hotel Itlaia for 15K which on the thriving black market there at the time was less than $5us for a small private room with bath.

They had an on site guide working there who had the least tenure of entire staff with 5 years. Found a couple of like minded trekkers to hire him.

Lots of bars in area but at nite turn left outside the hotel. Barrio and drug sales the other way
