Hi

Myself and my friend are travelling to Venezuela for 2 weeks in december and our first place of entry is the capital Caracas.

Can anyone please advise on the safest and best areas to stay in the city- we are on a shoestring budget and really want to enjoy the nightlife of the city. from my research to date there are no hostels in the city like in Rio and Buenos Aires.
A hotel could be an option but we would really like to mix with backpackers and locals to get an understanding of the city and its people. I know the city has got some bad press but we really would like to sample the place before we head towards the countryside. Our budget would be a max of $80 for a twin room for a night.

any help would be great- this is my first of many posts!

Thanks
R

The peatonal street around venezuela metro isn't the safest place in Caracas but I like it

I'd stayed at a couple of places. One a love hotel/backpackers named Nuestro
It was fun, safe (inside the gate) and served a good breakfast for $11 in 2005.

And another a middle class secure hotel Cristol about 2 blocks away. It again was safe inside for about $25 single

Best lively youth bar on peotoanl at the time that also change black market wa El Capricho. Good staff.

A good Tasca for more mature chatter was Rias Gallegos on Ave Francisco solano lopez

To mix with fellow backpackers in Caracas will be difficult as most tourists don't stay at all or not long there.
I stayed this autumn in "Nuestro Hotel". Unlike LP I wouldn't describe it "a genuine haven for the international backpacker set" especially as we didn't see any other tourists staying there. But it's clean, safe and affordable (something around 100Bs for a double). The neigborhood is dodgy at night, but the 200 meters to Sabana Grande are well lit and quite lively. From Sabana Grande there are some bars (several of them gay bars though) in the side alleys.

I do recommend you to go to Altamira or Mercedes for going out though and taking a (safe) taxi back to you hostel (30Bs). I liked Centro Commercial San Ignacio e.g..

ps: some people also recommended us Hotel Ritz (also in LP). It is only slightly more expensive than Nuestro Hotel.

Hello,

Nuestro Hotel is definitely an option; nevertheless, get back early and mind th epolice who have set up a road block almost just opposite the Hostel and are notorious for harrasing tourists. A safer option is Altamira. Some cheap hotels are available in this area and it is close to public tranportation, metro, buses, and many restaurants, cafes, bars and night clubs, and parks.

All the best,

Thomas
