Hi,

Me and 3 mates are heading for a 3 week tour round Venezuela & Colombia, starting off in Caracas on 29th Dec with the intention of staying in Caracas until New Years Day and heading on thereafter. Having read a few threads everyone seems to be very negative on Caracas especially round new year as it is dodgy and expensive. We are four lads who are not on too tight a budget and just want to party for 2/3 nights before heading on the cultural side of our trip. I would be keen to hear peoples views on
a) is Caracas really that bad? if so suggestions on alternatives for NYE?
b) Where is the good party spots?
c) Any recommendations for accommodation (preferably mid-range but not essential as it appears this category of accomodation does not exist!)?

thanks in advance.....

Hola Baggles

wellcome to venezuela, probably one of the most beautiful country in southamerica.

I was living in caracas for 1 year and i can tell you you can have fun and enjoy the city if you know where to go and where to stay.

about party, check las mercedes area and san francisco shopping center, both at the east side of the city, and if you speak some spanish for sure you will meet many friendly venezuelan people.

maybe is a good option to go to the beach, check choroni, tucacas or chichiriviche, not far from ccs and probably good party there.

about accom., its true youo dont have many options, check plaza venezuela area, many medium range hotels but sharing with love hours..., or hotel altamira in the east, 40 dollars por a double.

it will reopen los panitas youth hostel just for backpackers but probably not ready till january, check www.hostelworld.com or LP for the latest or if you have further questions, send me a message

adios amigos

Hello,

Thanks for taking an interest in Vzla! December is especially wild in Caracas - the atmosphere is great, but always watch your back, never forget you're in Caracas. I would suggest staying in the Altamira area, which is by far one of the safest areas in Caracas. In addition, it is close to party centers such as the Centro Comercial San Ignacio, full of bars and restaurants. Gets good on New Year's Eve, but you must get there early or have a reservation which can work out quite espensive. Another good spot would be Sawu, in Las Mercedes, it is a club which is currently in fashion. Remember to dress up. New Years Eve is quite a formal thing in Vzla, especially Caracas. The party can go on until the next morning or afternoon!

All the best,

Thomas
