I am going to Venezuela in january for 3 weeks.
We are planing to go to los Roques for 5 nights, but everywhere we look, people do not have good experinences....
Can anyone recomend los Roques as a place to go, or is it a waist of time and money, and would it be better to choice the northcoast as a place to relax ind the end of our vacation.
we are looking for all kinds of comments of Los Roques...

The island of Los Roques itself has only small posadas-kind of family small guest house or hotel, with touristic, medium, superior, VIP standard. Those from medium up to VIP standard are very cozy, stylish, decorative. There is one bank, one disco-bar, one restaurant. All meals are served in pasada you book. On main island there is nothing to do apart from sleeping in hammock during siesta time.
There is a boat terminal from where you can rent a motor boat to different small islands of Los Roques. The colour of water is amazing turquoise with contrast of white sands. There are islands where you seat in very warm water but up to your hips even far away from the beach, there are islands good for snorkelling or only to go for a long walk as island width is somethnig like 10m! Only 2 islands close to the main one have restaurant with bar.
Sun on Los Roques is very strong, I think going there for 3 days 2 nights is enough.

Los Roques is a lovely set of islands, though it is rather over-priced. I really enjoyed it when I visited about 2 years ago. Lovely beaches - there's little to do other than chill out and admire the turqouise colour of the water. Diving and windsurfing are popular there though.
I wouldn't describe the accommodation as VIP. I didn't see any genuinely amazing pousadas when I was there (I was carrying out various hotel inspections for a tour operator).
It's relatively undeveloped and chic at the same time. The Italians in particular love the island - that generally means it's a good thing as the Italians have good taste when it comes to going on holiday outside of Europe.
Macanoa was the best pousada that I saw, though there's some extra advice on accommodation on this brief guide to Los Roques .
I liked Los Roques, that beautiful clear, calm, turquoise water and lots of fish to see. I spent ages swimming and snorkelling. It is not the kind of place to go on your own, best with a lover.
We camped on a couple of islands (Crasqui and Francisqui). It was wonderful to have mornings and evenings on your own deserted island. Perhaps spend a bit of time in the hottest part of the day having a fish lunch, sipping cool beers and reading a book in a restaurant? The sun can be relentless.
If you camp you can buy supplies and water in the small supermarket in Gran Roque. Gran Roque is charming. Watch the pelicans formation-diving at sunset. There were sandflies and mosquitoes because it had been raining. Wearing long sleeves and trousers tucked-in at sun rise and set helps.

Los Roques is deinitely a great getaway! especially at the end of your trip. 5 nights can be a bit much though. Bear in mind the sun is very strong so take plent of sunscreen and mosquitoes and sandflies can be a pain so take plenty of repellent as well. If you want to get off the beaten track, away from the closer islands everyone gets to, you can try taking the Cayo de Agua Tour, available for approximately 200 Bsf per person. You can charter this tour from Oscar's Dive shop close to the pier. In addition, I would recommend you include breakfast and dinner into your accomodation. That way you'll have more freedom and mobiltity as you will not be stack for lunch anywhere.
